Kids need the right environment to do their best in school. Many different strategies and styles have been tried over the years but one thing that is clearly not conducive to learning (or much else, for that matter) is a leaking roof.

This project was to apply a coated spray polyurethane foam (SPF) system to the rooftop of a boiler room at a Kentucky facility, which wishes to remain unnamed.

When building owners wanted a more efficient update to the building’s mechanically attached ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) black roof, a less invasive application process was strongly preferred.

The school district’s roofs were metal, wood, built-up, or covered in spray polyurethane foam (SPF), and they were leaking. The crew had little time and lots to cover.

When Hurricane Harvey hit Texas this August, the Houston Hilton hotel was an especially busy place. Most of the hotel’s rooms were rented to the Red Cross volunteers who had come to help in the hurricane’s aftermath.

The building, which is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, includes offices leased to companies such as Kaiser Permanente. After a pre-inspection, the foam experts determined that the best solution for the leaky cap sheet roof was to apply a coated spray polyurethane foam (SPF) system.

Replacing the 30+-year-old roofs at a school may have been the strategy for many roofing contractors, but for contracting company RoofCARE, roof replacement is seen as a last resort.

Over the years since, many patching solutions were tried, but nothing ever completely stopped the leaks. As a result, ARCTEC and the U.S. Air Force contacted regional contractor Polyseal Insulation to develop a spray polyurethane foam (SPF) system for the entire 44,000-square-foot roofing area.

But despite the historic and cultural significances, the exterior of the building was in a bit of disarray. In particular, the building’s crown jewel — its emerald-colored dome — was leaking.

When Dixie Safe and Lock Inc. in Houston realized their 25-year-old corrugated metal roof was beginning to rust and leak into their building, they felt anything but secure.
