Excalibur Paint and Coatings, Ltd. Announces Approval
By The Texas Department of Transportation
Excalibur Paint and Coatings, Ltd. announces the approval by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) of its novel Aqua–Thane™, patent pending, low VOC, 2K acrylic waterborne polyurethane topcoat and OZWBP Series waterborne three component organic zinc rich epoxy primer for use on bridges exposed to severely corrosive conditions.
The TxDOT is committed to using products that enable the agency to comply with environmental regulations and, as importantly, minimize its impact on the environment. Where it has been possible, the agency has sought to approve paints and coatings that can replace conventional solventborne systems with low or zero VOC alternatives.
Aqua–Thane™, launched in 2010 by Excalibur, is the first commercially usable/viable waterborne polyurethane from a US company that offers outstanding performance in severely corrosive environments. Aqua-Thane™ provides excellent gloss retention, corrosion resistance, solvent and chemical resistance, abrasion resistance and exceptional hardness and flexibility while offering superior adhesion to a wide variety of surfaces including steel aluminum, plastics, galvanized metal (both electroplated and hot dipped), PVC, polypropylene and fiberglass composites.
OZWBP Series is designed for use on structural steel placed in corrosive environments and provides excellent flow and leveling with easy spray application in combination with high sag resistance and a 2,000+ hour salt fog protection with a 3-4 mil D.F.T.
When Aqua-Thane™ and OZWBP Series are used together as a complete corrosion resistant system, they meet or exceed the performance specifications of traditional solvent borne counterparts. Both Excalibur products have been determined to meet the requirements of the Materials Specifications for Structural Steel Paints used by the TxDOT, specifically DMS 8101.12 Epoxy Zinc Primer and DMS 8101.14 Urethane Appearance Coat.
“We are very excited to receive approval from the TxDOT for our waterborne corrosion resistant coating system,” observes Excalibur Paint CEO Randy Funston. “Our Aqua-Thane™ water based urethane top coat is our most recently launched environmentally friendly product, and recognition of its excellent performance profile by such a demanding customer is very gratifying.”
“As an agency with responsibility for the maintenance and protection of major transportation-related infrastructure, our material performance specifications are critical,” notes Russel Lenz, Construction Division Director with TxDOT. “Providing contractors with an additional material option with green benefits is an asset to the environment, the residents of Texas and TxDOT."
Excalibur Paint and Coatings is a manufacturer of high performance waterborne technology for use in the Transportation, Oil Field Services, Marine, Aviation, OEM, Automotive and Military sectors. Founded in April, 2000 specifically to develop environmentally friendly high performance coating alternatives, the company offers low and zero VOC systems that meet or exceed the performance properties of traditional solvent-borne products. Its patent-pending Aqua–Thane™ technology is just the latest example of the novel waterborne solutions being developed by Excalibur for extremely demanding applications.
TxDOT is headquartered in Austin and is comprised of 21 divisions staffed by more than 12,000 engineers, administrators, designers, architects, sign makers, accountants, purchasers, maintenance workers, travel counselors and many others. It is responsible for planning, designing, building, operating and maintaining the state's transportation system in cooperation with local and regional officials. Its goals are to enhance safety, reduce congestion, expand economic opportunity, improve air quality and preserve the value of transportation assets.
