Elcometer Manager Earns ASTM Lifetime Achievement Award

John Fletcher, a standards compliance manager at Elcometer was recently presented with the Lifetime Excellence and Achievement Award from global standards development organization ASTM International.

The award was presented at the organization’s June 2019 committee meeting in Denver, Colorado, in recognition of Fletcher’s services to the ASTM D01 Paint and Related Coatings, Materials, and Applications committee.

Committee Accomplishments

An ASTM International member since 2007, Fletcher was made chairman for the DO1 Committee in 2010, serving three consecutive two-year terms. After that, he became vice chairman. Fletcher went on to be nominated as a director on the ASTM International board for a three-year term, finishing in December 2019.

Throughout his time at ASTM, John has also served as the chairman of “D01 Sub-committee D01.23: Physical Properties of Applied Paint Films” for 10 years and as a member of “Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings.”

“I am honored to receive this award from the D01 committee,” said Fletcher, a member of NACE International and The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC). “I have really enjoyed my work with ASTM and shall miss my regular meetings with D01 members, many of whom I would call my friends. I joined ASTM after a lengthy period of preparing ballot responses for Elcometer’s founder, Ian Sellars, so I was well steeped in the ASTM methodology before I started attending committee meetings.”

Compliance With ISO Standards

Fletcher began working at Elcometer — a Manchester, United Kingdom-based inspection equipment manufacturer for the coatings, concrete, and metal detection industries — in 1982.

Now responsible for the company’s compliance with the ISO 9001 standard for quality management systems and the ISO 14001 standard for environmental management systems, he has traveled to the United States on a twice annual basis to represent the company at ASTM meetings.

Fletcher is also a Fellow of the U.K. Institute of Corrosion (ICorr) (Northampton, United Kingdom), as well as a former president and trustee. He is a chartered scientist through ICorr.
