Direct-to-Metal Coating for Canada, U.S. Marine Markets

Global paints, coatings, and specialty materials supplier PPG Industries has launched a new protective marine coating for U.S. and Canada markets.

Dubbed NOVAGUARD 810 ER, the coating offers fast application times while protecting fuel tanks, ballast tanks, and the internal and external superstructures of tugs and barges.

The coating’s technical features enable fast application times and a quicker return to service after coating, with touch-ups possible using a thin-film epoxy.

Technical Advantages

With its one-coat, direct-to-metal formulation, NOVAGUARD 810 ER can be applied easily with superior edge retention and a smooth finish, according to the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based company.

This two-component, solvent-free, amine rapid-cured novolac epoxy coating offers a high build of 20 to 40 mils (508 to 1,016 microns), with a wet film thickness of more than 50 mils (1,270 microns) without curtaining, sagging, or running.

In addition, the coating’s optically active pigment technology enables nondestructive ultraviolet (UV) light holiday detection, the company explains.

Potential Market Impact

Despite the competitiveness of the North American commercial marine market, PPG believes its latest coating is poised to make an impact, according to Al Kaminsky, marine manager for PPG’s protective and marine coatings business in the United States and Canada.

“PPG NOVAGUARD 810 ER passes on the advantages of cost savings and high performance to customers, enabling them to work their assets harder while being assured of extended service life,” Kaminsky said.

Along with NOVAGUARD 810 ER, PPG has also released SIGMASHIELD 880, a multipurpose, surface-tolerant epoxy for use in extreme marine environments. SIGMASHIELD 880 will be available for offshore infrastructure and support vessels in the United States and Canada.
