Chamberlin Waterproofs Billion-Dollar Parkland Hospital

The new Parkland Hospital opened its doors on, August 20, 2015. For three days, more than 600 patients were moved to the new hospital across the Mike A. Myers Sky Bridge. The pedestrian bridge hangs 30 feet above Harry Hines Boulevard, connecting the old hospital with the new facilities.

One interesting design feature of the new facility is the images of trees etched in glass on the pedestrian bridge, one of the efforts to put the “park” back in Parkland. From the inside, the tree branches and leaves are formed by names of more than 10,700 individuals, paid for by 4,732 donors to the “I Stand for Parkland” campaign. A kiosk will help individuals find their names on the bridge.

The new campus also promotes an environment of healing by incorporating natural lighting and a wellness garden. Hands-free door handles are one detail meant to prevent infections at the new hospital. In addition, all doors with exposed metal have antimicrobial coating, which means that germs on the doors’ hardware will perish quickly.

The shear size of the project is impressive: 2.1 million square feet. $1.27 billion. 862 private rooms. 96 neonatal ICU beds. 10,000 employees. 140,000 people treated yearly. It is the largest single-phase public healthcare project in the country.

Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing is proud to have been part of this this colossal undertaking with a $1.25 million scope of caulking, air barrier, flashing and wall insulation. The scale of even that relatively small piece of the overall project is best illustrated by the amount of materials installed. Chamberlin crews applied approximately 1,755 eight-ounce glasses of liquid sealant on the building exterior and 6.4 acres of air barrier - a total of 12,636 gallons of material.
